Real test: which school label will last the longest in 2026?

If you've ever wasted time printing labels, glued them on excitedly and in a few days it's took off, smudged or you look “old”, breathe: this is more common than it seems.

I've been working with personalization for years and, in practice, the durability of the label depends on 3 things: material, print configuration e application.

Today I'm going to show you a real test I did to find out which school label doesn't peel off or which lasts longer.

How the test went

I did four quick tests:

• Water: splashes and damp cloth (bottle/lunchbox)
• Friction: rub with your hand and put in the case (pencil and pen)
• Daily handling: open/close notebook, backpack, case
• Glue time: compare pasting “on the fly” vs. pasting and press well and wait a while

1) Pencil and pen

✅ Best choice for making school pencil labels: Vinyl A4 size 110g sticker
But you can also use 130g adhesive photo paper which has good durability

Because it's thin, flexible, doesn't smudge and doesn't “crumble” easily.

My usual size use

✅ School pencil label 3cm x 1.5cm

• Off Paper A4 110g Vinyl Sticker
• Off Paper 130g Adhesive Photo Paper

What is BOPP: It's a thin film that you use on top of paper to protect it from getting wet and fading. But the result was not good, as it was difficult to adhere to the materials.

2) Notebooks and books

✅ Best choice: photo adhesive 130g

Practical tip: if it's a heavily handled book/ notebook, use the contact paper over 60 microns or larger, over the label to “seal” it”

The size I usually wear:

 ✅5cm x 3.5cm

• Off Paper 130g Adhesive Photo Paper

3) Lunch box and bottle

✅ Waterproof school label the best choice: vinyl Sticker
These are items that get wet and rub against each other, so vinyl usually wins here.

4) Backpack and large case

Best choice: depends on the fabric/area

• Smooth surface : Adhesive vinyl
• Fabric : Thermocolant for fabric

How to print school labels without smudging

To avoid weak/blurry ink, use this setting for Epson inkjet printers

1. In Printer, select EPSON and click on Preferences/Properties.

Tab Main

3. In Document size, choose A4 (210 x 297 mm).
4. In Guidance, check Horizontal.
5. In Type of paper, select Premium Photo Paper Glossy.
6. In Quality, let Standard.
7. In Color, check Color (not black/grayscale).
8. In Double-sided printing, let No.

Tab More options

9. In Output paper, select Equal to the size of the document.
10. In Color correction, check Personalized and click on Advanced...
11. In the window Color correction, let Color controls marked.
12. In Color mode, select Adobe RGB.
13. In Gama, select 1,8.
14. Adjust the controls:

• Contrast: 15
• Saturation: 15
• Brightness: 0
• Density: 0

15. Click on OK to come back.
16. Still in More options, in Additional settings, let High speed marked (the others can be left unchecked).

(Optional) Save as default

17. Go back to the Main and click on Add/Remove Presets...
18. In Name, Enter a name to identify your configuration (Ex: PAPER2) and click on Save.
19. Click on Close to exit this screen.
20. Finally, click on OK in the properties and then in Print

After printing: let dry for a few minutes on a flat surface before cutting out/applying (this reduces smearing).

The right way to glue so it doesn't peel off

Here's the “secret” that works best in everyday life:

1. Clean the area (dry cloth; if there is oil, a little alcohol and wait for it to dry)
2. Apply with the surface very dry and you can also add a little white glue to help it stick
3. Press for 10-15 seconds, especially around the edges
4. On cylindrical objects (pencil/bottle): overlap slightly the tip of the label (“hugging”)
